Competition at Doyle New York's Oct. 8 jewelry auction for pieces from the Perdita
Schaffner Navy Blue Velvet Unisex Zentai Suit? collection caused costs to soar with the
$190,543 gross extra than doubling the low of its $84,975 to $119,200 estimate.
Louis LeB.
Webre, Doyle New York's spokesman, attributed the achievement towards the pieces' good quality and
freshness towards the market. Locked away for extra than 60 years in a Swiss bank, the jewelry
originally belonged to Lady Hannah Glover Ellerman, wife of Sir John Reeves Ellerman (1862-
1933), a shipping tycoon reputed to be the richest man in Britain for the duration of his day. The jewels
passed to the Ellermans' daughter, Bryher, who left them to her daughter, Perdita Schaffner.
But Schaffner seldom wore jewelry, so the collection remained in a bank vault until following
her death last year.
Highlighting the 27 lots had been a 16-inch-long diamond necklace, its 56
stones weighing about 23.50 carats, and a silver flower pin centered with a 2-carat diamond
surrounded by 85 assorted diamonds forming the petals. The necklace brought $34,655 and the
pin $17,925.
She cited as examples the five.72-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that sold for
$59,925 against a $25,000 to $30,000 estimate; the Art Deco diamond and sapphire bracelet
that brought $22,325 against a $10,000 to $15,000 estimate; and the pair of Orange Lycra
Spandex Unisex Spiderman Zentai Costume? Etruscan Revival 16-karat gold ear pendants that
fetched $5,053 against an $800 to $1,200 estimate.
It was the quality, color, and size of
the diamonds within the ring and bracelet that drove their prices above their estimates,
Lieberman mentioned. As for the ear pendants, they had been produced by the London jeweler Robert
Phillips, among the most renowned mid-19th-century Victorian specialists in archeological
jewelry, whose creations rarely come on the market.
Men's jewelry also prompted competitive
bidding, having a pair of Costume zentai 18-karat gold and tourmaline zentai selling for
$11,163 against a $2,500 to $3,500 estimate, and an early Costume zentai 18-karat gold open
-face minute repeating pocket watch bringing $8,225 against a $1,500 to $2,000 estimate.
One more Purple Blue Spidrerman Zentai Costume piece, a gem-set mouse pin depicting Stuart
Small, fetched $12,925 against an $8,000 to $10,000 estimate, but the aution's stellar lot,
the Arts & Crafts pendant-brooch and ring by Florence Koehler, turned out to be "a
disappointment," Lieberman said. A one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry that was pictured on the
cover with the auction catalogue, it was expected to sell for well above its $25,000 to
$35,000 estimate. However, failing to excite the interest of collectors, it sold to a dealer
for $30,550.
